Subaru Viziv STI Performance Concept Loosely Hints At Next WRX 12

Subaru wants to lure visitors at the 2018 Tokyo Auto Salon to its stand with a new concept car, the Viziv Performance STI.

The study builds upon last year’s Viziv, albeit with some styling changes made all around, with the most significant one being the large wing added to the boot.

Look closer and you will also see a tweaked rear diffuser made from carbon fiber, new side sills, reshaped front bumper with larger air intakes and STI branding, and a slightly modified grille. Emphasizing its sportier stance are the red accents applied to different parts of the exterior.

The rest of the car, though, appears to have remained untouched, but then again, at the time of writing, Subaru hasn’t treated us with an official press release, so the live images are all we’ve got.

Nevertheless, the new Subaru Viziv Performance STI is said to preview the next generation WRX STI, but knowing that the Japanese car marque tends to drastically tone down its concepts for production, this one will likely follow the same route.

Expected to arrive within the next few years, the upcoming Subaru WRX STI is believed to drop the current 2.5-liter Boxer engine and replace it with an entirely new unit. Some say that electrification might be on the table too, but we’ll just have to wait and see.

Subaru Viziv Performance STI Concept Announced For Tokyo Show 10

Subaru has given the Viziv Concept a more aggressive stance, and probably some changes beneath the skin, as they’re now going to unveil it at the 2018 Tokyo Auto Salon, later this week.

Named Subaru Viziv Performance STI Concept, it features a more aggressive front end, a muscular hood, wide wheel arches, large rear wing, red accents, and an ‘STI’ badge on the front grille.

It’s unknown at the moment what engine it carries, but since it’s expected to preview the next generation WRX STI, which is due in a few years, it’s likely powered by a new boxer engine, smaller than the current 2.5-liter unit that makes 305hp.

Subaru Tecnica International (STI) will also have a couple of other hot cars on display in Tokyo, from January 12, such as the Levorg STI Sport and BRZ STI Sport. These will be joined by the BRZ GT300 2017, WRX STI NBR Challenge 2016, Legacy RS 1993 New Zealand Rally, and Impreza 555 1996 San Remo Rally racers.

The WRX STI S208, a track-ready version of the car aimed solely at the Japanese market, will sit under the spotlight of the event as well.

Turns Out Jeremy Clarkson Isn’t As Good At Drifting As Ken Block 8

In last week’s episode of The Grand Tour, Jeremy Clarkson set out to prove that doing what Ken Block does during his Gymkhana videos is mostly video editing, rather than pure skill.

Of course, he was painfully wrong, as proven by the segment he titled Farmkhana: Ultimate_Country_Playground, which consists of a Subaru STI getting thrashed around a farm.

The problem is, Clarkson relied mostly on editing to make his drive look epic, which did work to some extent, but all you have to do is pay close attention to a few of the details in order to see everything that’s wrong with the picture.

Not only was the show’s host stationary in some of the shots (revving the car while standing still, pressing the pedals chaotically and so on), but he also failed to drift properly through certain obstacles, which is something Ken Block certainly doesn’t need any help with.

After the segment itself, you can watch a short “Behind-The-Scenes” video, which will show you exactly what we mean. That STI has probably never felt more helpless.

The Grand Tour Season 2 Episode 5 Trailer Is Filled With Action 4

This week on The Grand Tour: Jeremy gets inspired by Ken Block and wants to do one of those amazing videos, while Richard drives a small tank through a shopping mall, and James tests out a city car.

The action-filled trailer starts with Clarkson and an old Subaru Impreza WRX STI rally car, which is thrashed around an English farmland in an attempt to do some Ken Block-ing controlled drifts.

In a different continent, in UAE’s Dubai, Hammond sits inside a small tank, which he uses in a luxurious shopping center, before taking it on the Sheikh Mohammad Bin Rashid Boulevard, and on the sand dunes. This part of the show was filmed more than a year ago, and it was initially believed that Jezza was in the driver’s seat.

Meanwhile, May takes a trip to the Eboladrome test track to try out the Volkswagen Up! GTI, surrounded by flames and explosions, which he compares to “an 80s action movie”.

We also see the facelifted Volkswagen Golf GTI going against its iconic predecessor, the Mk1 Golf GTI.

Back in the studio tent, Richard Hammond and James May reveal some behind-the-scenes footage that’s described as “embarrassing”, whereas the Celebrity Face Off shows English comedian, musician, TV and radio presenter Bill Bailey, and English actor Dominic Edward Cooper, in an attempt to find “the world’s fastest person with a failed early career in a band”.

Subaru BRZ tS And WRX STI Type RA Pricing Announced For U.S. 14
Dec
Posted by Michael Gauthier in prices, Subaru, Subaru BRZ, Subaru WRX, Subaru WRX STI, USA on 12 14th, 2017

Subaru has released pricing information for the limited edition BRZ tS and WRX STI Type RA.

Starting in alphabetical order, the BRZ tS will cost $33,495 when it arrives at U.S. dealerships next spring. That’s a hefty premium over the standard model but the tS has been tuned by STI and it features an aerodynamic body kit, an adjustable carbon fiber rear spoiler, and 18-inch wheels with Michelin Pilot Sport tires.

The sporty styling continues in the cabin as drivers with find leather and Alcantara upholstery as well as red contrast stitching. Other highlights include red seat belts, a frameless rearview mirror, and a 7-inch infotainment system with GPS navigation.

While the model eschews a turbocharged engine, it has been equipped with new draw stiffeners, a V-brace, and a returned suspension that features SACHS dampers and coil springs. There’s also a high-performance braking system with Brembo rotors.

The WRX STI Type RA, on the other hand, will cost a whopping $48,995. It features a modestly revised exterior with a carbon fiber roof, a carbon fiber rear wing, and 19-inch BBS forged alloy wheels.

Interior revisions are minor but include Recaro front seats and an ultrasuede steering wheel. Elsewhere, there’s red contrast stitching and an individually numbered plaque on the center console.

Motivation is provided by a turbocharged 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine which has been equipped with a cold air intake, a high-performance exhaust system, an optimized ECU, and new pistons. Thanks to these changes, the car produces 310 hp (231 kW) which is a minor an increase of 5 hp (3 kW). The engine is connected to an upgraded six-speed manual transmission with a short-throw shifter.

Speaking of performance, the WRX STI Type RA has Bilstein dampers, an active torque vectoring system, and a unique Multi-Mode Vehicle Dynamics Control system. Drivers will also appreciate the car’s high-performance Brembo braking system with cross-drilled rotors and 6-piston monoblock front calipers.

Subaru WRX STI To Be Discontinued In Europe From 2018 22
Nov
Posted by Brad Anderson in Reports, Subaru, Subaru WRX, Subaru WRX STI on 11 22nd, 2017

Subaru Germany has confirmed that production of the WRX STI for the European market will be discontinued in early summer 2018.

As a result, the 2018 WRX STI will be the final model year of the sports sedan, marking the end of a strong 17-year production run for Europe.

In a statement, managing director of Subaru Deutschland Christian Amenda said strict emissions regulations in the continent make it impossible for the STI to survive.

“The WRX STI has a long and successful motorsport history and enjoys a small but loyal fan base. The increasingly stringent emission regulations in Europe make the conditions for such a classic athlete more difficult, which is why the manufacturer decided to stop production.

“As of early summer 2018, no new models will be produced for the European market, but sales will be extended until at least the end of 2018, with sufficient pre-orders. Of course, we want to give the four-time class winner of the 24 Hours Nürburgring Nordschleife a fitting farewell, details are currently being worked out,” Amenda said.

Despite its popularity around the world, the WRX STI has never been a big seller for Subaru in Germany. In fact, the marque has only sold 859 units there since 2011.

Last week
, we received word that Subaru is still assessing the future of the WRX STI in other markets. It is possible the next-generation model will adopt some form of electrification.

No Direct Replacement For Subaru’s WRX STI, Hybrid Tech Considered For New Model 15
Nov
Posted by Michael Karkafiris in Hybrids, Reports, Subaru, Subaru WRX STI on 11 15th, 2017

Subaru has no plans for a direct replacement of the WRX STI but that doesn’t mean that we won’t get a new one at all.

With the current WRX STI steadily heading to retirement, Subaru will soon have a very emotionally significant hole in its range that will remain vacant for a few years, before the successor shows up.

The reason for this delay, according to Subaru Europe’s General Manager of sales and marketing David Dello Stritto who spoke with Dutch Autorai, is because the company is still looking at how the market develops in order to finalize the concept of the next WRX STI.

With the current turbocharged 2.5-liter boxer engine being too dirty to pass the upcoming stricter emissions regulations, Subaru has to find another way of giving its customers their rallycar-for-the-road fix. “We’re not really giving up on ‘fun to drive’. The new Impreza also provides this, but in a different, more environmentally sound way, “said Dello Stritto.

Among their options is of course an electrified powertrain as Subaru’s latest Global Platform was developed with hybrids in mind but Dello Stritto avoided confirming it, saying only that all options are investigated and “there’s really a new WRX STI coming, but it’ll take time.”
