Subaru Viziv STI Performance Concept Loosely Hints At Next WRX 12
Jan

Subaru wants to lure visitors at the 2018 Tokyo Auto Salon to its stand with a new concept car, the Viziv Performance STI.

The study builds upon last year’s Viziv, albeit with some styling changes made all around, with the most significant one being the large wing added to the boot.

Look closer and you will also see a tweaked rear diffuser made from carbon fiber, new side sills, reshaped front bumper with larger air intakes and STI branding, and a slightly modified grille. Emphasizing its sportier stance are the red accents applied to different parts of the exterior.

The rest of the car, though, appears to have remained untouched, but then again, at the time of writing, Subaru hasn’t treated us with an official press release, so the live images are all we’ve got.

Nevertheless, the new Subaru Viziv Performance STI is said to preview the next generation WRX STI, but knowing that the Japanese car marque tends to drastically tone down its concepts for production, this one will likely follow the same route.

Expected to arrive within the next few years, the upcoming Subaru WRX STI is believed to drop the current 2.5-liter Boxer engine and replace it with an entirely new unit. Some say that electrification might be on the table too, but we’ll just have to wait and see.

Toyota Gazoo Racing GR Super Sport Concept Packs 986HP Turbo V6 Hybrid 12

Last December, Gazoo Racing, which is Toyota’s motorsport division, teased a new Super Sport Concept with just the silhouette of the vehicle. One the eve of the 2018 Tokyo Auto Salon, Toyota Gazoo Racing unveiled the GR Super Sport Concept in all of its funky glory.

The Tokyo Auto Salon is Japan’s version of SEMA, which means that there will be plenty of incredible machines on display. But we have a feeling that Gazoo Racing’s concept will be one of the more absurd vehicles at the show.

The motorsport division has taken a lot of the components found on the TS050 Hybrid that Toyota raced in WEC and packed them into a striking concept. Power comes from a 2.4-liter twin-turbocharged V6 engine, just like in the actual race car, that’s also paired to a Toyota Hybrid System. Combined output for the concept is claimed to be 986 horsepower (1,000 PS).

Besides the information on the powertrain, Gazoo Racing didn’t provide any other interesting tidbits on the vehicle, except that it previews how Toyota, according to Gazoo Racing’s President Shigeki Tomoyama, plans to “develop sports cars from active race cars.”

In addition to having a similar powertrain to the TS050 Hybrid, the GSR Super Sport Concept looks like it could compete in the WEC. There are no headlights, there’s nothing that resembles a traditional door, no regular windows, and nothing that gives us the impression that it could be used on the road.

What the concept does have, though, is plenty of aero. Look at those front canards and the strange front-end design. They both look like they come straight off of the real-life race car, just spruced up a little bit. There’s also a fin on the back, like WEC competitors, and what appears to be a sizable rear wing. It really does look like the motorsport arm took Toyota’s racing experience and turned it into a car.

If this is what future sports cars and supercars from Toyota will look like, then we’re definitely on board. The GR Super Sport Concept is the ideal vehicle to lead Toyota’s and Gazoo Racing’s GR lineup of performance vehicles.

Rocket Bunny Ford F-150 Raptor Is Wrong In All The Right Ways 10
Jan

The Ford F-150 Raptor is the Blue Oval’s most capable and rugged off-roader. Thanks to a bunch of high-performance parts there’s not much that can slow it down. Pandem rocketbunny tra-kyoto has another idea for the Raptor – a slammed, JDM-inspired take on the rugged pickup.

The company, which is known for taking both the mundane and already-incredible machines, like the Nissan GT-R, and turning them into unforgettable cars, has worked its magic on the F-150 Raptor.

The pickup, or the illustrations of it, features a prominent front spoiler, wider fenders, a lowering kit, and a chunkier set of Toyo Tires. The rear end of the vehicle looks like it goes untouched besides a larger set of exhaust outlets.

The styling won’t be for everyone, as the wide body kit and the slammed stance mean that the F-150 Raptor won’t be able to go trekking through the snow. Still, this is so far out there that we can’t help but love it.

The real pickup will be on display at the 2018 Tokyo Auto Salon, which begins on January 12. The modified F-150 Raptor will be on hand at the Toyo Tires stand at the auto show alongside some other rad vehicles – BJ Baldwin’s trophy truck and Ken Block’s Hoonicorn V2.

Subaru Viziv Performance STI Concept Announced For Tokyo Show 10

Subaru has given the Viziv Concept a more aggressive stance, and probably some changes beneath the skin, as they’re now going to unveil it at the 2018 Tokyo Auto Salon, later this week.

Named Subaru Viziv Performance STI Concept, it features a more aggressive front end, a muscular hood, wide wheel arches, large rear wing, red accents, and an ‘STI’ badge on the front grille.

It’s unknown at the moment what engine it carries, but since it’s expected to preview the next generation WRX STI, which is due in a few years, it’s likely powered by a new boxer engine, smaller than the current 2.5-liter unit that makes 305hp.

Subaru Tecnica International (STI) will also have a couple of other hot cars on display in Tokyo, from January 12, such as the Levorg STI Sport and BRZ STI Sport. These will be joined by the BRZ GT300 2017, WRX STI NBR Challenge 2016, Legacy RS 1993 New Zealand Rally, and Impreza 555 1996 San Remo Rally racers.

The WRX STI S208, a track-ready version of the car aimed solely at the Japanese market, will sit under the spotlight of the event as well.

Suzuki Xbee Could Be The Coolest Thing At The 2018 Tokyo Salon 28

Posted by Carscoops Staff in Suzuki, Suzuki Concepts, Suzuki Swift, Suzuki Xbee, Tokyo Auto Salon on 12 28th, 2017

Maybe it’s a fad, maybe Proust was right and we’re just harkening back to our childhood. But there’s something we really dig about an SUV wrapped in camouflage.

Not the shape-obscuring wraps automakers put on their prototypes, but proper military-style multicolor camo – like the treatment on this Suzuki.

Called the Xbee Winter Adventure, it’s a conceptual version of the retro-rugged compact crossover that Suzuki recently released, and will now exhibit at the Tokyo Auto Salon… complete with blue-grey camo, yellow accents, and roof rack.

Of course the Xbee isn’t the only vehicle that the Japanese automaker will show at the forthcoming exhibition. There’ll also be a camper version of the new Spacia wagon, a Carry pickup rigged for fishing, and a Swift Sport done up in matte black and red accents to mirror the GSX-S1000 superbike alongside which it will be exhibited.

Suzuki will have 12 vehicles on show in all, including versions of the Solio Bandit, Alto Works, Wagon R Stingray, and Spacia Custom. But with apologies to that sporty little Swift, it’s the camo Xbee we like most.

Personalization is becoming big business in the automotive industry – especially in Japan, where it seems almost everyone customizes their ride in one direction or another. And Daihatsu is showcasing the range of possibilities at the upcoming Tokyo Auto Salon.

The Japanese automaker is bringing nine show cars to the tuner expo this year, aligned into three groups of three: sporty, premium, and active.

The sporty lineup includes the Boon Sporto Package and the Sporza versions of the Thor wagon and Mira hatchback, each with two-tone red and black livery with gold wheels and all manner of aerodynamic upgrades.

Daihatsu’s also done up the Thor, Move Canbus, and Tanto wagons in Premium versions, with pearl white bodywork, black accents, and extra chrome for a more elegant look.

The blue cars pictured make up the Active category, aimed at those who like to venture off the beaten path with an appetite for adventure and applied to the Boon and two versions of the little Hijet truck.

They all go to show that small and cheap – Daihatsu’s forte – don’t need to mean boring, whatever your sense of style.

CR-V Custom Concept Leads Honda’s Lineup For The 2018 Tokyo Salon 24

In just a couple of weeks the 2018 Tokyo Auto Salon will open its doors, and Honda has just revealed the vehicles that it will bring on the event.

Perhaps the most important of them will be the CR-V Custom Concept pictured above. Though Honda has only released the name and a sole image, our best guess is that we could be looking at a sportier version of the company’s compact crossover.

The CR-V won’t be the only concept on display, though – not by a long shot. It’ll be joined by the RS Custom Concept of the Jade minivan, while the Modulo X line will also be well represented by concept versions of the STEP WGN and S660 kei cars, and the Mugen division will show the Civic Type R-based RC 20 GT.

The new Jade RS production model will be showcased as well, alongside a Mugen-tuned Civic hatchback. Also on display will be the new NSX, Civic Type R, N-One RS, and Freed Modulo X, together with an array of racing models like the Dallara DW12 IndyCar, NSX GT3, Civic TCR, Super Formula single-seater, and Super GT-spec NSX GT – plus, of course, a number of Honda’s racing motorcycles.

Nissan Leaf Grand Touring Concept Joins A Flurry Of Tuned Studies For 2018 Tokyo Auto Salon 21

Nissan has announced a bunch of premieres for next year’s Tokyo Auto Salon, which opens its gates on January 12, one of them being the Leaf Grand Touring Concept.

The show car is not as aggressively styled as the Leaf Nismo that debuted two months ago, but it does get a few interesting bits, such as the two-tone black and matte silver finish.

No images of the interior have been released yet, but the automaker describes it as “stylish and sophisticated” thanks to the addition of some special accents. We wouldn’t be surprised if some of these features will be adopted by a new trim level of the electric car called ‘Grand Touring’, in the Japan at least.

The ‘Grand Touring‘ moniker has been used again on an X-Trail Concept, which will go under the spotlight at the Tokyo event as well. This version of the SUV, which is known on our shores as Rogue, is aimed at those loving the outdoors, and it gets a special exterior graphic, and some different trim in the cabin.

There’s also a Nissan NV 350 Caravan Grand Touring Concept heading to the 2018 Tokyo Auto Salon, which goes for an ‘off-road look’ as well, equipped with BF Goodrich all-terrain tires, special exterior accents and decals, and minor tweaks inside.

Nissan has a few more surprises in store too for the event, including the Fairlady Z Heritage Edition, a special version of the 370Z, the Note e-Power C-Gear, an “outdoor version” of the vehicle, and three new concept cars called Serena e-Power Autech, Note e-Power Autech, and X-Trail Autech.

Elsewhere, visitors to the brand’s stand will also get to see the GT-R Nismo, Note e-Power Nismo, X-Trail Nismo Performance Package, Serena Nismo, Leaf Nismo Concept, and Motul Autech GT-R racer.

Toyota Gazoo Super Sport Concept Teased Ahead Of Tokyo Debut 15

Posted by Michael Karkafiris in concepts, Gazoo, Tokyo Auto Salon, TOYOTA, Toyota Concepts on 12 15th, 2017

While the world is still waiting for the new Supra to finally break cover, Toyota has dropped a teaser for a new Super Sport Concept coming from its performance Gazoo Racing department.

The new supercar concept will debut at the 2018 Tokyo Auto Salon as a Le Mans-inspired flagship of the GR range.

Toyota says that the concept will exhibit how they can apply the lessons learned from their participation in the WEC racing series to a car for the street, with the single teaser image revealing a pretty hardcore automobile.

So far there’s no official information on whether Toyota is actually thinking of putting a car like the upcoming Super Sport Concept into production, leading us to believe that this is still to be decided.

The new supercar concept will debut on January 12 at the Tokyo Auto Salon, along with Toyota’s new WEC racers and production models such as the Toyota 86 GR and the Vitz GRMN.

This Is What A Nissan Skyline R34 GT-R VSpec II Nür With 10km Looks Like 15

We don’t know if this makes us sad or happy; a virtually unused 2002 Nissan Skyline GT-R V-Spec II Nür is heading to an auction, giving us a great opportunity to see the iconic R34 in a brand-new state.

On the other hand, having the keys to one of the most sought-after performance icons on the planet and not driving it does makes us sad, especially since this is one of the last examples of its generation.

The 2002 Nissan Skyline GT-R VSpec II Nür is sort-of the last hurrah for the R34 generation, mixing the VSpec II goodness with an upgraded RB26 engine. Despite the engine’s specs remaining officially unchanged, at 276hp and 293lb-ft of torque, Nissan had installed bigger turbos with a slightly bigger boost pressure and a reinforced block, making the engine even more durable to future upgrades.

Other features include a speedometer that tops out at 300km/h (186mph) and an exclusive interior stitching along with the usual VSpec II goodies such as the stiffer suspension, the bigger brakes, the carbon fiber bonnet and the iridium interior trim pieces.

The car is described as unregistered and will be auctioned by BHauction at the Tokyo Auto Salon on January 12, 2018.

Restored Mazda Miatas Bound For Tokyo Auto Salon 14

Posted by Brad Anderson in Classics, Mazda, Mazda MX-5 / Miata, Reports, Tokyo Auto Salon on 12 14th, 2017

Mazda will show off the fruits of its labor at January’s Tokyo Auto Salon by premiering three original-generation MX-5 Miatas which have been restored through the recently-established NA Roadster Restore program.

The three Miatas bound for Tokyo come painted in red, white, and blue and will reveal to MX-5 enthusiasts how the automaker can breathe new life into the timeless sports car. Mazda says it will start accepting commissions from Miata owners on December 13 for restoration projects.

Beyond offering its own restoration services, the NA Roadster Restore program has put numerous parts from the NA-generation Miata back into production, namely the fabric roof, Bridgestone tires, Nardi steering wheel, and shift knob of the car.

To ensure the highest quality restoration service possible, Mazda has received certification from the Japanese division of German standards organization TÜV Rheinland on every aspect of the restoration.

The NA Roadster Restore program will initially be offered exclusively to Japanese MX-5 owners.
