Fiat Punto Slapped With Zero Stars In Euro-NCAP’s Latest Safety Ratings 13

The Fiat Punto became the first model to receive a disappointing zero-star safety rating by Euro-NCAP.

The ageing Italian supermini has been on sale since 2005 and the new results reveal that it’s outclassed by every car tested in recent history, making it Euro NCAP’s first car ever to be awarded with zero stars.

The Fiat Punto managed to score two stars in adult and child occupant safety and pedestrian protection but the lack of driver assistance and crash avoidance systems brought its total score to zero.

“This is perhaps the strongest example of a manufacturer continuing to sell a product that is well past its best-before date, at the expense of the unsuspecting car buyer. We would urge consumers to check our website for the latest ratings and to choose cars with the most up-to-date five-star ratings, many examples of which we have seen in 2017”, Euro NCAP Secretary General, Michiel van Ratingen said.

The European New Car Assessment Programme updated the ratings of several recently facelifted models to allow consumers making a fair comparison to new cars. These included the Toyota Yaris, the Toyota Aygo, the Alfa Romeo Giulietta, the Ford C-Max and Grand C-Max, the Opel Karl, the DS3 and the Fiat Punto.

With the exception of the Toyota Yaris which kept its five-star rating, most of the other models dropped to three stars in this year’s safety tests. The Toyota Aygo scored four stars with the optional safety equipment.

The safety organization also tested new models, awarding five stars to the Hyundai Kona, the Kia Stinger, the new BMW 6-Series and the Jaguar F-Pace. Three stars were awarded to the MG ZS SUV, the second-gen Dacia Duster and the Kia Stonic, which scores five stars when fitted with the optional safety equipment.

Ford Pulls The Plug On The C-Max Energi 10
Posted by Michael Gauthier in Ford, Ford C-Max, Hybrids, PHEV, Reports on 11 10th, 2017

Ford has quietly pulled the plug on the C-Max Energi.

Speaking with Green Car Reports, Ford’s North American Car Communications Manager confirmed the model has already gone out of production. Dan Jones went on to say the C-Max Hybrid will continue to be built until the middle of next year.

While Ford originally had high hopes for the C-Max, it was never really a strong seller. According to Carsalesbase, sales peaked in 2013 when the company sold 35,210 units in the United States but they quickly dropped from there. Last year, the company only sold 19,834 units which pales in comparison to the 98,863 Toyota Prius models that were sold.

Most people won’t miss the C-Max but the hybrid variant starts at $24,120 and has a 2.0-liter four-cylinder Atkinson-cycle and a small electric motor that is powered by a 1.4 kWh lithium-ion battery. This setup enables the car to produce a combined output of 188 hp (140 kW) and return an EPA-estimated 42 mpg city / 38 mpg highway / 40 mpg combined.

The C-Max Energi, on the other hand, was a plug-in hybrid which cost $27,120. Its powertrain largely carried over but it was equipped with a larger 7.6 kWh battery that enabled the model to travel up to 20 miles (32 km) on electricity alone.

The outline for 3 new BMW upcoming front-wheel drive models is out. The manufacturer is expected to market these in the next few years. The new front-wheel drive range, as mentioned in the site is likely to be a Compact, a Compactive Sport Gran Tourer and a Family Activity Sports Tourer. This will mark a new segment or series of the company.

The Compact model will be a hatchback, as speculated earlier. The Compactive Sport Gran Tourer will be in the form of a minivan.

It is expected to become a premium alternative to the popular volume models such as the Ford C-Max and VW Touran.

The Family Activity Sports Tourer, as the name suggests, will be a larger crossover-like vehicle for families.

It is more likely to be a cross auto between a mid-sized minivan and a BMW X-model along with a higher seating position. This will be a brand new addition in the BMW X-model segment. Well, no further details are available yet.
