X Games Double Loop Dare Sets Guinness World Record: Video 2
Posted by Kurt Ernst in Automotive, Guinness World Record, Hot Wheels, Kurt, Stunts, video, X Games on 07 2nd, 2012

As kids, we’d bet that all of us amassed a pretty serious collection of Hot Wheels cars and track. Loop-the-loops and jumps were standard fare for Hot Wheels, and the entertainment value was generally determined by the risk of crashing violently (or the risk of terrifying the family cat). As kids, we probably wondered why no one did stunts like this in real life, too.

Hot Wheels wondered that as well, so it decided to enlist the help of drivers Greg Tracy and Tanner Foust to set a new Guinness World Record for a double loop-the-loop. In case you were wondering, each loop was 60 feet tall, and falling upside down from a height of six stories would not have ended well. You can bet there was a lot of planning (and very little margin for error) that went into the making of this record attempt.

If you’ve ever owned Hot Wheels of your own, the stunt is worth watching. We’d advise against trying this on your own, even if you do have the resources to build a specialized stunt car and a backyard ramp that dwarfs your house. If you really want to duplicate this at home, Hot Wheels would prefer you to buy its Team Hot Wheels Double Dare Snare track set, available at toy retailers everywhere. Failure with the Hot Wheels set may not be as spectacular, but neither will the medical bills.

Ford Launches The ‘Octane Academy’ 15

Want to be the next Ken Block or Tanner Foust? Want to learn how to drift like Vaughn Gitten, Jr.? Want to see if you can out-drive Brian Deegan on a rallycross track? Ford is giving you the chance to prove yourself in an upcoming promotion called the “Octane Academy”. Entrants need to submit a video of themselves in action, describing (or better yet, demonstrating) why they should make the cut.

Participants selected from their videos will be chosen to attend one of four “Octane Academies,” which include:

– An off-road academy in the Ford Raptor, led by Brian Deegan
– A gymkhana academy in the Ford Fiesta, led by Ken Block
– A drift academy in the Ford Mustang, led by Vaughn Gittin, Jr.
– A rallycross academy in the Ford Focus, led by Tanner Foust

Winners collect prizes along the way, and the best driver from each academy gets a Ford vehicle customized by Deegan, Block, Gittin or Foust. Those picked for the academies also get some world class instruction from the biggest names in extreme sports.

What’s in it for Ford? Lots of attention from the demographic known as “millennials,” but also commonly referred to as Generation Y. There’s no rule limiting contest entrants to a specific age group (which would undoubtedly be illegal), but I’d say your chances of making the cut if you were born before 1980 lie between “slim” and “none”. Ford sees Gen Y as the most important market segment after Baby Boomers, despite the fact that most in Gen Y don’t have the same obsession with the automobile that Boomers did.

Look for Ford to kick off the Octane Academy at the summer X Games, scheduled for July 28 to 31. In the mean time, check out the video below for Ford’s take on the program.

The Detroit Auto Show that gets underway next month will see Toyota unveil its Prius family for the world. The world premiere will be significant for Toyota for the reason that the event will be witness to the world showcasing of the Prius Plug-in hybrid vehicle (PHV) and a new Prius concept study.

These models will accompany the earlier announced Prius MPV christened Alpha. Not many details of the new vehicles have been let out, but it is expected that the Prius MPV will come with 50 per cent more cargo space.

Toyota will also incorporate a new entertainment system aimed at ushering in the applause of the whole family.  To be driven by a 1.8-liter petrol engine and an electric motor, the hybrid is expected to return a combined output of 134 hp.

A new video of the family of Prius cars that features X Games champion skateboarder Bob Burnquist has been revealed in the form of a teaser. Heregoes:
