Options List Leaks For Upcoming BMW X7 xDrive50i 21
Dec
Posted by Brad Anderson in BMW, BMW X7, Reports, SUV on 12 21st, 2017

The long-awaited BMW X7 is just around the corner and a list of standard features and options for the upcoming X7 xDrive50i has leaked online.

BMW Blog reports that the X7 xDrive50i will probably be one of the most popular X7 variants and come fitted with a 4.4-liter twin-turbocharged V8 engine delivering 455 hp. The list of standard features confirms that the vehicle will utilize an eight-speed automatic transmission and the company’s xDrive all-wheel drive system.

Moving to the options, certainly most interesting is the presence of an M Sport Differential. No existing xDrive-equipped BMW models feature a limited-slip differential, except the recent M5. Consequently, it is possible that the xDrive50i will be offered with an all-wheel drive system very similar to the M5 or alternatively, in a rear-wheel drive variation.

Alongside the M Sport Differential, the options list includes things like ambient lighting, concierge services, rear-seat entertainment, massage seats for the driver and front passenger, soft close automatic doors, remote engine start, and night vision with object recognition.

BMW recently started building pre-production X7s at its Spartanburg plant and is set to use them for homologation, registration, and endurance testing in extreme conditions.

BMW Teases X7 Flagship SUV As First Pre-Production Models Roll Off The Line 19

BMW’s Spartanburg plant has started churning out the first pre-production examples of the upcoming X7 full-size luxury SUV.

The Bavarian car maker is now putting the X7 through its final stages of development, with the production version expected to hit the market at the end of 2018.

“This is a very special vehicle and our employees are looking forward to yet a further member of the X family,” said Knudt Flor, head of the BMW Group Spartanburg plant. “Together with the BMW X7, a total of five BMW X models will be exported from Spartanburg to all four corners of the globe.”

The pre-production examples of the BMW X7 will be used for homologation and registration, as well as for endurance tests in extreme weather conditions. The production of the pre-production models also serves as a test for the Spartanburg plant, helping them optimise the future series production of the X7.

Cars will remain camouflaged with a striped-pattern wrap in a bid to hide the Bavarian flagship SUV’s final look. That didn’t stop BMW from releasing a few images of some naked cars sitting on the assembly line and showing off details of the front end which is dominated by the huge kidney grille and some sleek headlights.

The upcoming BMW X7 will rival models like the Range Rover and Mercedes GLS-Class once it hits the market.

BMW’s New Strategy: M All The Things – 26 Models Reportedly Coming By 2021 7

Posted by Michael Gauthier in BMW, BMW 3-series, BMW 4-Series, BMW M, BMW M3, BMW M8, BMW X2, BMW X3, BMW X4, BMW X7, BMW Z4, Reports on 12 7th, 2017

BMW recently announced plans to offer 25 electrified models by 2025 and it appears the company is going to need all of these eco-friendly vehicles to help offset a massive onslaught on new M models.

According to Autocar, BMW is preparing to launch 26 M and M Performance vehicles over the next few years. The M8 will be unveiled next year but the real push will begin when the all-new M3 debuts at Frankfurt Motor Show in 2019. As BMW M boss Frank van Meel explained, “The M3 is a crucial car for BMW M … it wasn’t the first fully fledged M car but it continues to stand for everything the brand is based upon.”

The report says the new M3 will ride on the CLAR platform and feature more aluminum and high-strength steel. The car is also slated to adopt a number of carbon fiber components to ensure it weighs less than the M3 CS which recently debuted at the Los Angeles Auto Show.

Despite rumors of a hybrid powertrain, sources told the publication we can expect a conventional twin-turbo 3.0-liter six-cylinder engine that produces around 465 hp (346 kW). The car will reportedly be offered with a six-speed manual and an optional eight-speed automatic transmission. Regardless of which gearbox is selected both are slated to send power to the rear-wheels as the rumored all-wheel drive system was reportedly deemed too heavy and expensive.

Besides the M3, we can expect M versions of the X3, X4, and Z4. They are slated to be joined by M Performance variants of the 3-Series, 4-Series, X2, and X7.

BMW Tests The Upcoming X7 Near Munich 6
Dec

The BMW X7 is arguably the most eagerly-anticipated vehicle currently being developed by the German carmaker and when it launches, is almost guaranteed to sell in considerable numbers.

BMW has been testing X7 prototypes for well over a year and Carscoops reader Krystian Granatowski recently snapped some images of one on a highway near Munich.

As with previous prototypes scooped testing in recent months, this example is bathed in white and black camouflage that hides most of its key design traits. In fact, all we can ascertain from the images is that the X7 will feature a huge kidney front grille, roof rails, black wheel arches, and large rectangular tailpipes.

Beneath the skin, the X7 utilizes BMW’s CLAR platform, already in use with the latest-generation 5- and 7-Series. A host of petrol and diesel engines in six- and eight-cylinder configurations are widely expected, as is a plug-in hybrid with a four-cylinder.

Much to the delight of President Donald Trump, BMW confirmed last year that the X7 will be built in Spartanburg, South Carolina. The SUV should hit the streets as a 2019MY.

Hat tip to Krystian Granatowski for the photos!

BMW’s Huge X7 iPerformance Concept Arrives In LA 1
Dec
Posted by Brad Anderson in BMW, BMW X7, Galleries, LA Auto Show, Reports, SUV on 12 1st, 2017

Alongside the BMW i Vision Dynamics Concept at BMW’s LA Auto Show booth sits this, the X7 iPerformance, unveiled at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September.

As the name implies, the concept has been created as a preview for the impending X7 and bring with it an eye-catching design radically different than any current production SUV built by the automaker.

The front is unquestionably the most talked-about aspect of the vehicle. BMW designers have fitted a truly ghastly chrome kidney grille which may actually make you feel sick in the stomach. The huge grille has divided opinion among those to see the concept in person and we can’t help but think it needs to be refined for the production model.

Looking beyond the questionable grille, the rest of the X7 iPerformance’s exterior design is quite appealing. It includes slim headlights, big wheels, thin A-, B-, and C-pillars, and a seductive rear-end with narrow LED taillights.

While we don’t know how similar the road-going X7 will look to the concept, we understand that the SUV will be sold with at least three different engines, including a 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8 with roughly 445 hp.

BMW Considering A New X8, Might Be Launched Around 2020 15
Nov
Posted by Michael Gauthier in BMW, BMW X7, Reports on 11 15th, 2017

BMW recently filed a trademark for the iX8 moniker and that has fueled rumors the company is working on a new crossover to slot above the 2019 X7.

While nothing is official, Autocar is claiming the model will be launched around 2020 and be positioned as a competitor to the Audi Q8 and Range Rover.

That seems to be speculation at the moment but BMW’s head of development confirmed the model was under consideration as “The sector is growing fast, so there will be opportunity.” Klaus Fröhlich went on to say “There is room for [an] X8, especially in markets like China, but there are no decisions yet.”

The publication went on to say the company is considering a number of different ideas for the X8 but the model would likely ride on the same platform that underpins the X7. While the X4 and X6 have coupe-inspired styling, it appears BMW is debating whether the X8 should follow the same philosophy or become a long-wheelbase version of the X7. The latter route would is similar to what Cadillac, Lincoln, and Range Rover do with both standard and long-wheelbase versions of their flagship SUV.

Regardless of which direction the company goes, it is believed the X8 would only be offered with a four- or five seat interior. This decision would put a lot of emphasis on passenger comfort and designers would likely reinforce this idea by adding premium materials and high-tech toys such as an advanced rear seat entertainment system.

If the model is eventually approved, it will likely be offered with an assortment of different powertrains. Nothing is official but possible choices include everything from a plug-in hybrid variant with a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine to a range-topping model with a twin-turbo 6.6-liter V12.
