When Will It End? Takata Recalls Another 3.3 Million Airbags In The USA 8

Takata added another 3.3 million airbag inflators to the continuously expanding recall, making it the largest of its kind in the United States of America.

According to a report published by DetroitFreePress, the latest action revolves around the faulty frontal airbags in certain 2009, 2010, and 2013 vehicles made by a variety of car brands.

The list of automakers includes Audi, BMW, Daimler Vans, Fiat Chrysler Automobiles, Ford, General Motors, Honda, Jaguar Land Rover, Mazda, Mercedes-Benz, Mitsubishi, Subaru, and Tesla. The exact models will be announced later this month, in the paperwork submitted to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

Takata’s faulty airbag inflators include ammonium nitrate, a chemical used to create a small explosion that fills the airbags quickly in the event of a crash. However, it’s known that when exposed to high temperatures and humidity, the chemical deteriorates, causing the metal canister to blow apart and spreading shrapnel into the cabin.

So far, at least 180 people have been injured by the metal bits worldwide, and more than 20 have lost their lives.

The NHTSA continues to monitor the automakers’ repairs progress, but even though Takata recalls originally began back in 2001, many companies have been slow to replace the airbag inflators.

A report published by an independent monitor, quoted by DetroitFreePress, states that 43.1 million inflators had been recalled until September 15, 2017, out of which only 18.5 million had been replaced, which accounts for 43 percent.

Mercedes Compact Models To Share Renault’s New Small Petrol Engine 18
Dec
Posted by Cristian Gnaticov in Daimler, mercedes, Mercedes A-Class, Mercedes B-Class, Mercedes GLA, Mercedes GLC, renault, Reports on 12 18th, 2017

Daimler and the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi Alliance co-developed a new 1.3-liter petrol engine that recently debuted on the Scenic and Grand Scenic.

However, the powertrain will eventually be expanded to various cars within the Alliance, and it will also be used on several front-wheel drive models coming from Mercedes-Benz, reports AutoNews.

A Daimler spokesperson confirmed that the next generation A-Class is among the vehicles that will put the 1.3-liter lump to use, and different variations of the unit will be offered in the B-Class, GLA, and GLC as well, but no details surrounding the outputs or where it will be put together have been released so far.

However, the small petrol unit is offered on the French minivans in a choice of three power levels, starting with the TCe 115PS (113hp) and TCe 140PS (138hp), and ending with the TCe 160PS (158hp). The first one comes exclusively with a manual gearbox, whereas the mid-range can be had with an EDC dual-clutch automatic as well, and the latter is offered solely with an automatic transmission, so we won’t be surprised if Merc’s models will follow a similar route.

Renault-Nissan and Daimler’s collaboration started 7 years ago, and so far it has seen the French brand’s 1.5-liter dCi diesel engines being used in the entry-level A-Class, B-Class, and GLA. Moreover, the 1.6-liter petrol unit developed by Renault is also used in the C-Class, and the Renault Kangoo has been rebadged by Mercedes and sold as the controversial Citan.

Geely Still Looking To Buy A Stake In Daimler 18

Chinese automaker Geely still intends on purchasing a stake from Daimler, despite its initial offer being rejected by the German automaker.

According to local publication The Global Times, Geely intends on investing roughly 4 billion euros ($4.73 billion) to acquire a 3 to 5 per cent stake in Daimler. If the investment is approved, Geely will become the third-largest shareholder of Daimler.

Three weeks ago, it emerged that Daimler had rejected Geely’s bid to purchase a 5 per cent stake through a discounted share placement. At the time, Daimler said it would welcome an investment from the carmaker if it purchased shares in the open market.

Daimler already has joint ventures with Chinese carmakers BAIC Motor Corp and BYD while Geely has a controlling stake in Volvo and Lotus.

Daimler Refuses Geely Offer To Buy Stake In German Brand 30

Daimler has refused an offer from Chinese automaker Geely to purchase a 5 per cent stake in the company.

According to Reuters, Geely offered to purchase 5 per cent of Daimler through a discounted share placement in a deal which would cost approximately $4.5 billion at market prices.

Insiders believe Geely wants to gain access to Daimler’s electric vehicle technology as tough new emissions laws are passed in China. Upon refusing the offer, Daimler said Geely can buy shares in the open market.

Although Geely has failed to comment on the reports, a Daimler spokesman said it is welcome to new investors with long-term interest in the company.

If Daimler did accept Geely’s offer, the Chinese firm would have become Daimler’s third-largest shareholder behind the Kuwait Investment Authority and BlackRock.

Daimler already has joint ventures with Chinese carmakers BAIC Motor Corp and BYD.

Daimler Plugs In A New Electric School Bus, Production Starts In 2019 9
Nov
Posted by Cristian Gnaticov in Daimler, Electric Vehicles, Reports on 11 9th, 2017

Daimler is among many automakers committed to making the future of motoring emissions free, and an electric school bus is part of that plan.

Developed under their North American subsidiary Thomas Built Buses, a company founded in 1916 that’s known worldwide for its yellow school buses made for films and television, it’s called the ‘Saf-T-Liner C2’, or ‘Jouley’.

“During the development of the Saf-T-Liner C2 Electric Bus Thomas Built Buses was able to draw upon Daimler’s electric technology resources”, Daimler explained, adding that Thomas Built Busses holds a market share of 38.7 percent.

The German automotive giant says that it can take 81 kids to school “safely, quietly, and emission-free”, and that it has a 160kWh battery as standard that provides a total driving range of up to 99 miles (160km). Additionally, more battery packs can be fitted as optional extras, thus increasing its zero-emission range, but Daimler has remained tight-lipped about additional details.

Still, the Jouley school bus will hit the assembly lines in 2019, so expect to see one in your neighborhood, nationwide, in the coming years.

BMW, Daimler, Ford, And VW Team Up To Launch European Charging Joint Venture 3
Nov

BMW, Daimler, Ford, and the Volkswagen Group have teamed up to form a new joint venture called IONITY.

Created to develop and implement a high-power charging network across Europe, IONITY aims to make long distance travel in electric vehicles easier and less frustrating. The joint venture will be based in Munich and has plans open approximately 400 charging stations in Europe by 2020.

20 stations are slated to be opened later this year and they will be located on major roads in Austria, Germany, and Norway. The stations will be located 120 km (74 miles) apart from each other and have a capacity of up to 350 kW per charging point.

Each station will use the European Combined Charging System standard and it promises to “significantly reduce charging times compared to existing systems.” The use of the standard will also allow multiple customers, driving different manufacturer cars, to charge their vehicles simultaneously.

The network will expand to more than 100 stations in 2018 and companies all have equal shares in the joint venture. Other automakers have been invited to help expand the network and IONITY’s goal is to help make electric vehicles more appealing to consumers.
