A Brief History Of Automotive Safety Courtesy Of Mercedes-Benz 24

If you want to judge carmakers by their past achievements and how consistently they brought innovations to the forefront of the automotive industry, then you could say we owe quite a lot to Mercedes-Benz.

In this video brought to us by YouTube channel Veratasium, we not only get to “take a ride” in what’s widely regarded as the world’s first automobile, but also explore some of the safety features Mercedes invented throughout its history.

But first, the Benz Patent-Motorwagen. What you see here is actually a replica of that very first car propelled by an internal combustion engine, which was built originally in 1885.

Apparently, riding in one (or on one, you could say), feels surprisingly fast, even though the car only tops out at 16 km/h (10 mph). Yet 16 years after the Motorwagen was launched, the automaker introduced cars that could do 80 km/h (50 mph), and in 1928 you could already hit 192 km/h (119 mph) in a Mercedes-Benz – faster than lots of entry-level budget cars being built today.

Fast forward a few decades, and you have Mercedes inventing all sorts of passive and active safety systems – things we get to take for granted today, such as ABS, crumple zones and airbags, which make cars much safer.

Since then, Mercedes have gone on to build some of the safest cars on the road, though in today’s modern world, they’re pretty much neck and neck with rivals such as BMW or Audi. Still, being first at inventing something definitely deserves recognition.

Bikini-Clad Girl Runs Out Of Car Following Collision 23

What we have here is a clear-cut case of somebody running a red light and smashing into another car.

In fact, the title of the video gives everything away. The driver of the blue Toyota Corolla sedan t-boned that white Honda Accord after failing to stop at the light.

However, that’s not the whole story, because if you keep watching, you just might just notice all the girls that jump out of that Corolla, one of whom is turning on the burners so as to cover up her bikini bottoms as quickly as possible.

The impact wasn’t too hard, thankfully, and everybody involved seemed to be in good health, at least from a distance. As for where this occurred, the description of the video states “the highway exit to Picton”, which is in New South Wales, Australia, just south of Sydney.

From the looks of it, these ladies may have been coming back from the beach, or perhaps the pool, and the one behind the wheel might have been a little distracted as she approached the intersection.

VW Arteon Makes Drag Racing Debut Against BMW 5er In Confusing Manner 23

Going head to head in this standing start drag race is a VW Arteon R-Line powered by a 2.0-liter engine, and an old BMW 5-Series F10, powered by a 3.0-liter petrol unit.

Unfortunately that’s all the information we get as we’re left to interpret exactly what cars are being raced against each other.

Now, since this event takes place somewhere in Eastern Europe, we can safely assume that the 3.0-liter petrol-powered 5-Series is either a 535i (less likely), a 530i, a 528i or a 523i. Meanwhile, the Arteon is either the 280 PS flagship or the 190 PS TSI model.

Another way to figure out which versions we’re looking at is by interpreting the results. Without giving anything away, we’ll say that if the Arteon is indeed the 280 PS turbocharged model, then that F10 5-Series can only be a 530i (272 PS) or a 528i (258 PS).

If it’s the 190 PS Arteon, then the presence of a 523i (204 PS) could also explain the outcome of the race if you factor in how the F10 BMW 5-Series is a slightly heavier car than the much-newer VW Arteon.

Note: Best to turn the volume down on your speakers for this one. The race was filmed with an extremely noisy drone

The Audi R8 V10 Plus Truly Is An All-Season Supercar 23

Most supercars get locked away for the winter and often fall too, but not this Audi R8 V10 Plus, which shows that it can handle the snow easily, almost as good as one of its iconic predecessors, the Quattro.

However, while the Quattro was rally-bred, the R8 is a 21st century supercar, and one of the few in this class that can be used as a daily driver without massive compromises.

Filmed at the foot of the Tatra Mountains in Zakopane, Poland, the following video depicts the German supercar in a beautiful landscape, with the R8 V10 Plus being referred to as “a real winter warrior”.

If the footage has whet your appetite, then get ready to spend at least $164,900 for the base 540 HP R8 Coupe, and some $30,000 more for the range-topping V10 Plus that’s featured here and puts out no less than 602hp and 413lb-ft (560Nm) of torque.

Dust Cloud Causes Crash In Australia, Car Written Off 23
Nov
Posted by Sergiu Tudose in Accidents, Australia, Offbeat News, video on 11 23rd, 2017

This accident is a perfect example of why drivers should slow down when there’s poor road visibility of any type, whether it’s rain, snow, fog or dust.

Judging by what the dashcam is showing, the car wasn’t traveling particularly fast. It was doing between 60 and 65 km/h, but if he had slowed down to around 40km/h tops, it should have helped him stop relatively quickly in the event of an emergency.

Those same numbers show that the driver failed to decelerate fast enough, and maintained his speed as he entered the dust cloud. It’s an unfortunate accident that could have been avoided.

“I had been following for 30 minutes and constantly slowing while waiting for dust to clear. The truck stopped on the road but never put on lights or hazards. The dust never cleared like I expected and I saw it too late. I tried to swerve, but still hit him. This resulted in the car being written off. There were no injuries.”

As for where and when this happened, it was last week in Normanton, Queensland, which is in Northern Australia. Good thing nobody was hurt.

The Grand Tour Is Still Auditioning Drivers While Renaults Suffer 23

Yesterday, it was a red Clio RS flying into a building like something out of The Dukes of Hazzard, while today, it’s a Megane Coupe that doesn’t get to go home in one piece.

In this second season of The Grand Tour, Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond and James May are looking for a new race driver/stuntman who can handle driving all sorts of cars, really, really fast.

The first audition they held, for the sake of comedy obviously, was published yesterday and, well, in case you haven’t seen it, here’s how it went down. Good thing all that car violence was in the script, otherwise it’s hard to imagine giving that driver a second chance.

Alas, here we go again, same driver, different Renault, same enthusiastic Hammond, who claims the man simply “got carried away last time.”

Let’s just say that the outcome of this second attempt at racing around the track was immediately obvious once the car set off. But at least the guy is good at plain old stunts, so maybe we’ll see more of him once the show kicks off, December 8th on Amazon Prime Video.

This BMW 2002 Project Car Is Powered By An M5 V8 23

When BMW first launched their 2002 model in the late 60s, it’s unlikely they ever imagined somebody would fit a 400 horsepower V8 underneath its bonnet.

Then again, the title of this video is “Dream Build”, where the dream was to get this 2002 Bimmer to accept the S62 V8 engine from a 2001 E39 M5.

Now that the build is ready, the owner of the car thought fit to talks us through everything that went into this project and how this car differs from your regular 2002 model, even though you might not know it just by looking at it.

For starters, a lot of mechanical changes were made in order to help this car handle all the extra muscle. So despite it looking mostly stock, some major underbody reinforcement took place, while a Nissan 240SX “donated” its front and rear suspension to help the cause. Other mods include brand new fenders, new doors, a new quarter panel, rear tail section, basically a lot of changes that thankfully didn’t do much to alter the car’s appearance.

Inside, you’ll find Recaro seats, a momo steering wheel, custom gauge cluster and some nice white contrast stitching all over the black leather.

Earlier this year, we saw Jay Leno drive a 1976 BMW 2002 with an S14 M power unit, from a 1989 BMW M3. It’s safe to say this one here is way quicker.

Will The New Tesla Roadster Actually Hit 60 MPH In 1.9 Seconds? 23
Nov
Posted by Brad Anderson in Electric Vehicles, Tesla, Tesla Roadster, Tesla Videos, video on 11 23rd, 2017

If Tesla’s bold acceleration claims for the second-generation Roadster come to fruition, the electric sports car will be the quickest accelerating production car ever built.

Tesla asserts that the Roadster will hit 60 mph in just 1.9 seconds, 100 mph in 4.2 seconds, and complete the quarter mile in 8.8 seconds. However, are these ambitious times even possible?

To find out, Engineering Explained set about discovering how fast a car can accelerate with street-legal production tires.

Last year, the YouTuber asserted that with current tire technology, no production car could reach 60 mph quicker than 2.05 seconds. However, in the 12 months since then, tire technology has improved and will probably continue to improve through to the Roadster’s launch, meaning a 1.9 second time isn’t an impossibility.

Another interesting take away from recent talk about the Roadster is the possibility of it using rocket technology. Elon Musk hinted at this on Twitter and theoretically, the sports car could accelerate to 60 mph in 0.01 seconds, as long as the rockets used had enough thrust.

Knowing that Tesla’s claims are possible, it’s now just up to the company to ensure the production model achieves them.

Aftermath Videos Of A Totaled McLaren 570S In London 23

A McLaren 570S is no more, after it was crashed under unverified circumstances.

The accident reportedly happened in central London, a couple of weeks ago, and judging by the videos that follow, the British supercar appears to be damaged beyond repair.

Its front end is ruined, and so are the rest of its sides, while it’s also missing a wheel and the suspension. Moreover, it seems that the engine bay has suffered significant damages of its own, but the passenger compartment has remained in one piece, suggesting that the occupant(s) might have walked away.

One of the videos’ description might give us a clue as to what exactly happened, as it says: “this crazy guy [McLaren 570S driver] hit a war pensioner, then ran from the scene”. If that’s indeed the case, then there’s a good chance that at the time of reporting this story, the driver had been identified.

It hasn’t been a McLaren-loving month, as this incident joins another one in which a P1 was extensively damaged in Cambodia, whereas in Georgia, USA, a man was taken into custody after speeding in his 720S on the State Route 400.

Uber Paid Hackers To Keep Breach A Secret; How To Check If You’re At Risk 23
Nov
Posted by Michael Karkafiris in Reports, Uber, video on 11 23rd, 2017

After suffering from a massive breach that had the data from 57 million riders and drivers stolen, Uber paid the hackers to conceal the event which was kept a secret until now.

The huge hack took place in October 2016 and only now the ride-hailing giant came forward and made the official announcement.

The stolen data included names, email addresses and phone numbers of 50 million Uber customers as well as the personal information on seven million Uber drivers, including around 600,000 driver’s license plates.

Uber claims that no social security numbers, credit card information, trip location details or other were taken during the attack. The company also says that it paid the two individuals responsible for the attack $100,000 in order to delete the stolen data and remain quiet.

Drivers who had their license numbers exposed are being individually notified, with Uber providing them with free credit monitoring and identity theft protection. The company is also in contact with regulatory authorities.

Uber has fired its chief security officer Joe Sullivan and one of his deputies for their role in keeping the breach a secret. During the time of the attack, Uber was in the middle of negotiations with U.S. regulators who were investigating separate claims of privacy violations.

The ride-hailing firm now acknowledges it had a legal obligation to report the hack to authorities and to the affected drivers. Instead, they decided to pay the hackers in order to delete the data and remain silent about the attack.

“None of this should have happened, and I will not make excuses for it. While I can’t erase the past, I can commit on behalf of every Uber employee that we will learn from our mistakes”, said Dara Khosrowshahi who became Uber’s Chief Executive Officer last September and claims he didn’t learn of the attack until recently.

“We are changing the way we do business, putting integrity at the core of every decision we make and working hard to earn the trust of our customers.”

Following Uber’s announcement, NY Attorney General Eric Schneiderman launched an investigation into the hack while Uber was also hit with a lawsuit over the breach by a customer, seeking class-action status.

What should you do about it?

Uber drivers can find out if their data was stolen on this link. Uber says that the affected accounts belonging to riders are currently monitored and have been additionally updated with extra fraud protection but there’s currently no official way of finding out if your rider’s account has been breached.

Uber claims that outside forensic experts “have not seen any indication that trip location history, credit card numbers, bank account numbers, Social Security numbers or dates of birth were downloaded”.

That’s not exactly reassuring so you may want to take some real precaution measures, like changing your password, set up credit monitoring, going through your accounts for any suspicious activity and even issuing a credit freeze to allow you complete control over new transactions.

McLaren 720S Is Finally Beaten In A Drag Race, But By What? 23

It’s obvious by now that not even an all-wheel drive Italian exotic, whether it be stock, supercharged or even twin-turbocharged, can slay the mighty McLaren 720S, which is definitely a lot more powerful than it lets on.

During a recent dyno test earlier this month, a stock 720S managed to put down 691 WHP, which could translate into roughly 770 to 800 HP at the crank, maybe even a bit more.

So to see it demolish anything it comes across shouldn’t really be all that surprising. Let’s include 1/4 mile times in this statement, since the 720S managed to cover the distance in just 9.7 seconds.

If you haven’t watched the video yet, you’re probably wondering what on Earth could have beaten the 720S in a straight line, especially the way it happened – catching up to it and passing it at high speed.

Well, let’s just say it’s a very similar type of car, mostly stock, though rocking Fabspeed high flow cats and custom exhaust system.
