Ford Focus RS vs Audi SQ7: Is There A Real-Life Lesson Somewhere In There? 2

Suppose you’re driving your new Ford Focus RS when an Audi SQ7 pulls up next to you on the traffic lights. This is going to be interesting.

Sure the two cars are not by any measure comparable but still it’s interesting to see which one is the fastest. Will it be the big diesel-powered SUV or is the grade-A hot hatch too tough for the traffic light grand prix?

The Audi SQ7 is powered by a 4.0-liter V8 TDI engine that makes use of an electric-powered compressor in order to eliminate the traditional turbo lag. Despite the big footprint, the fastest of the Q7s is capable of a 0-62mph in 4.8 seconds which sounds competitive enough for the Focus RS.

The Ford Focus RS is powered by a smaller 2.3-liter EcoBoost engine that makes 345hp channeled also to all four wheels. Ford says it’ll do a 0-62mph sprint in 4.7 seconds, making things more intriguing.

Top Gear magazine brought the two together in their latest drag race video, so let’s see if the manual hot hatch will beat the big automatic diesel SUV. Ladies and gentlemen, place your bets.

The first trailer of the new 25th season of Top Gear has aired, showing Ken Block chasing the three presenters around on loose gravel.

Armed with a buggy, Officer Block has his sights set on Matt, Chris and Rory who are driving a selection of V8 sports cars, including the Ford Mustang GT350R, the McLaren 570 GT and the Jaguar F-Type SVR.

It’s not the first time we see Block showcasing his tire-shredding abilities on the popular show, with the last one being the now-infamous sight-seeing tour through London with his Hoonicorn Mustang.

If you ever wanted to see how a modern McLaren tackles the dirt or were just thirsty for some lovely V8 noises, the new season of Top Gear will have you covered.

Unfortunately the show didn’t reveal its premiere date just yet, but they did promise to announce it early next year.

Chris Harris Takes On The New Lamborghini Huracan Performante 23

It took a while before Top Gear’s Chris Harris got his hands on the new Lamborghini Huracan Performante, but the review is finally here.

Thus, the following video shows the automotive journalist and TV host drive the Italian supercar really fast on the Knockhill track.

Lamborghini have really done some serious work on the Performante, with clever aerodynamics, a giant rear wing, tuned four-wheel drive, recalibrated steering, grippy tires made by Pirelli and an extra 30PS (30hp) and 40Nm (30lb-ft) of torque produced by the 5.2-liter naturally aspirated V10, which resulted in it braking the Nurburgring lap record by posting an unbelievable sub-7min time, beating the Porsche 918 Spyder and even Lambo’s own Aventador SV.

These noticeable changes have significantly transformed the Huracan Performante over its LP610-4 sibling, turning it into a proper driver’s car, according to Chris Harris, who states that this is, quite probably, the best car Lamborghini makes right now.

Nevertheless, as mega as it may be, it’s not perfect, as you can see in the video that follows after the jump.

Clarkson Says Elon Musk Is “Petulant” And “Doesn’t Like Losing” 21

Jeremy Clarkson recently admitted that he was impressed by the Tesla Model X during a recent test drive for The Grand Tour. However, it doesn’t appear as though the outspoken journalist is a big fan of the Model X’s creator, Elon Musk.

Top Gear was famously sued by Elon Musk in 2008 for libel after a review of the Tesla Roadster showed the electric sports car running out of power and suffering brake failure. Musk lost the lawsuit but has been a critic of Clarkson ever since.

Recently speaking with The Daily Beast after the premiere of the first episode of The Grand Tour’s second season, Clarkson said Musk has “sour grapes” about the whole ordeal.

“He sued me and lost, he appealed and lost. You go online and you read that we ‘made it up,’ that we ‘faked it’…We didn’t.

“You see, if anybody is going to get sued, I mean you can’t say that sort of thing. I could say all sorts of things about Musk but I won’t. Musk doesn’t like losing. Unfortunately, he did twice…He’s just got sour grapes.

“I actually reviewed the new Tesla in the new show and in many ways, it’s tremendous. I’ve got no axe to grind. He’s the only one who ever behaved in such a petulant way—most industry bosses are a lot more grown up,” Clarkson said.

Few will deny that at the time of its launch, the original Tesla Roadster had numerous shortcomings, perhaps none more significant than its poor handling compared to the Lotus it was based on. However, in the decade since, the electric carmaker has defied the skeptics and continued to produce electric vehicles, including the affordable Model 3.

With that being said, things aren’t entirely rosy and the company does have some way to go before being a proper rival to the established players in the auto industry.

The following video is from a BBC interview of Elon Musk from 2013

BMW M3 Competition Pack Takes On M4 GTS In 1/4 Mile Race 19

If losing a drag race to one of your siblings is more acceptable in the automotive industry than being out-performed by a direct rival, then neither of these cars has anything to worry about.

On one hand, it would take a brave M3 owner to want to challenge an M4 GTS, even if it’s just a straight line drag race and not a quick lap of some racing circuit – which is where the M4 GTS shines.

Then again, with the Competition Pack, the M3 truly is at its best when it comes to acceleration. It’s got 450 PS (444 HP), better wheels, plus upgraded springs, dampers and anti-roll bars for its Adaptive M suspension.

As for the M4 GTS, not only does it have 500 PS (493 HP) and 600 Nm (442 lb-ft) of torque, it’s also missing its rear seats, boasts an enhanced M differential, a re-tuned electromechanical steering system, adjustable suspension and a massive rear wing, which is probably one of the first things you notice when looking at it.

In the end, the race was quite close, but mostly because one of these two M-cars struggled to get decent grip off the line.

Chris Harris Pits New Honda Civic Type R Against Its Acclaimed EP3 Ancestor 17
Dec
Posted by Michael Karkafiris in Chris Harris, Film, honda, Honda Civic Type-R, Honda Videos, Top Gear, video on 12 17th, 2017

The latest Honda Civic Type R is indeed one of the best hot hatches in the market right now, but how does it fare against its much praised EP3 ancestor?

Why the EP3, you might ask? Because that was Honda’s last hot hatch employing a proper independent suspension at the back, allowing the light chassis to be sophisticated enough for its naturally aspirated 200hp VTEC engine. The two generations of Type Rs that followed did a 180-degree turn on that matter as they employed a (cheaper) beam setup.

Moreover, Honda was considered to be the last frontier of naturally aspirated engines until the iconic Civic Type R turned to turbocharging – but that doesn’t mean that it’s lost its mojo.

In fact, and since Honda used a turbo engine in the previous model, we’ve witnessed the Type R rising again as one of the most hardcore hot hatches in the segment.

Does this mean though that the new Civic Type R is a more inspiring drive than its naturally aspirated ancestor? Chris Harris investigates in the video that follows.

Chris Harris Can’t Get Excited About The Tesla Model S P100D 9

Our favorite Top Gear presenter finally gets a go in Tesla’s Model S P100D, giving us some of his thoughts on arguably one of the most hyped automobiles out there.

It’s easy to understand why the Model S P100D created such a huge ripple effect in the automotive scene, as it’s basically a long-range electric vehicle that can accelerate faster than almost anything in the market right now.

It’s also a really good road car, offering plenty of room for five or seven passengers and their luggage as well as tons of grip and near-silent comfort, not to mention that it’s supported by the most complete charging infrastructure out there.

Despite all the amazing credentials Tesla’s ultra-fast Model S comes with, and unlike other reviewers, Harris wan’t that impressed by it and makes some very interesting observations, as you can see in the video that follows.

Land Rover Thinks Chris Harris Works On The Grand Tour 30
Nov
Posted by Brad Anderson in Chris Harris, Funny, Land Rover, The Grand Tour, Top Gear on 11 30th, 2017

Thanks to the BBC’s decision to end its relationship with Jeremy Clarkson back in 2015, the world now has two great automotive TV shows to enjoy – The Grand Tour and Top Gear.

However, it doesn’t appear as though Land Rover got the message, as evidenced by packages it recently sent to the hosts of The Grand Tour.

Instead of addressing the packages to Jeremy Clarkson, James May, and Richard Hammond, one was addressed to Chris Harris, one of the lead presenters of the revamped series of Top Gear.

Jeremy Clarkson took to Instagram to share the embarrassing gaff with his 765,000 followers, almost certainly leaving someone at the Jaguar Land Rover office rather red faced.

However, this does have us thinking. What if The Grand Tour somehow poached Chris Harris from the BBC and will use him as a co-host, potentially as the new driver?

Such a scenario is extremely unlikely but if it were to happen, you wouldn’t hear us complain.

Chris Harris Picks The Best Performance Cars Of 2017 26
Nov
Posted by Brad Anderson in Chris Harris, Top Gear, video on 11 26th, 2017

As part of Top Gear’s ongoing Performance Car of the Year 2017, Chris Harris has selected his seven best performance cars of the past 12 months.

In a field of 13 seriously impressive vehicles, there is a selection of cars that seemed to stand out to the Top Gear host, particularly the brand new 2017 Ford GT, a car that shares more with a Le Mans racer than any of its road-legal rivals.

Elsewhere, the British journalist is a big fan of the way the Lamborghini Huracan Performante drives, even though he hates how it looks. For those familiar with Harris, you’ll know that he has never been a fan of the Huracan, suggesting that it is an understeering mess. With the Performante, Lamborghini seems to have perfected the mid-engine formula.

Other cars selected by Harris include the McLaren 720S and the Porsche 911 GT3. Can you guess which are the rest that made it into his list?

Audi SQ7 And Panamera 4S D Out To Prove Diesels Are Still Cool 7

We’re a little over two years away from the 2020s and the automotive world has already planned its shift to fully-electric vehicles and advanced driver assistance systems.

Fallout from VW’s Dieselgate scandal has effected pretty much all diesel-powered cars in the world as many consumers tend to view these cars a lot differently than before.

Still, from a purely performance related standpoint, you can still have plenty of fun behind the wheel of a diesel, as long as it’s got sufficient power and torque to haul its own mass around with haste.

Starting with the Audi SQ7, it’s powered by a 4.0-liter diesel V8, good for 435 PS and a whooping 900 Nm (663 lb-ft) of torque. In a straight line, it will hit 100 km/h (62 mph) in 4.8 seconds, which is as good as an E92 BMW M3.

As for the Porsche Panamera 4S Diesel, its 4.0-liter V8 churns out a bit less power and torque, at 422 PS and 850 Nm (627 lb-ft), yet since this is a lighter car, it will sprint to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 4.5 seconds – make that 4.3 seconds if you get the Sport Chrono Pack.

Anyone daring enough to bet on the Audi SUV?
