Hyundai seems to be on road developing a Veloster with a traditional five-door body style.

Though it sounds peculiar, it has to be noted that Hyundai could be hedging their bets in case consumers balk at the current model’s four-door arrangement which has two normal doors, a tiny third door (on the passenger side) and a rear hatch.

Designed to compete with the Mini Cooper and Scion tC, the previous version of Veloster featured motorcycle-inspired styling that is highlighted by black A-pillars, muscular wheel arches, LED-infused headlights, a center-mounted dual exhaust, and 17-inch alloy wheels (18-inchers are optional).  Though Hyundai called the Veloster a three-door coupe, the car actually had four-doors as there’s two traditional front doors, a hatch, and a unique forward-hinged rear door (on the passenger side) which improves access to the back seat.

So far, there has been no word as to when the model will be launched.

Stay tuned.

Rumor: Hyundai To Show Veloster Turbo In New York 11

Hyundai's Veloster, soon available in extra strength? Image: Hyundai Motor America.

When I toured Hyundai’s Montgomery, AL manufacturing plant as part of the 2011 Elantra launch, I pitched them the idea of an Elantra Type R. “Just throw in the motor from the Sonata Turbo and offer it with a six speed manual,” I said, but Hyundai shot down my request quicker than Scarlett Johansson would shoot down my request for a three-way. When it comes to building sporty compact cars, Hyundai has big plans (and a laser-like focus) on their Veloster. The Veloster introduced in Detroit wasn’t much to make enthusiasts sit up and take note; after all, how entertaining could 138 horsepower really be? Now comes word that Hyundai has a Veloster-ace-up-their-sleeve in store for the upcoming New York Auto Show, in the form of a 208 horsepower Veloster Turbo.

Details are sketchy, but I’m inclined to believe the rumors based on Hyundai’s market positioning (and expectations) of the Veloster. The Veloster Turbo reportedly uses the same 1.6 liter, inline four engine as the base Veloster, but with forced induction giving it an additional 70 horsepower. Better yet, rumors say the Veloster Turbo is more than just a concept, and that inventory will hit dealer showrooms later this year alongside the normally aspirated Veloster. We’ll have more details when the New York Auto Show begins next week.

Hyundai Veloster Rally Car to Debut at Chicago 8

Hyundai is set to unleash the Veloster rally car at the Chicago Auto Show after we saw the production ready version of the standard model at the Detroit Auto Show last month. Hyundai are tight lipped on further details, but they did release an image of the car with Red Bull racing colors. The car was having heavy under body protection, an extended rear wing and hopefully a bulky suspension too.

Considering that the standard Veloster is powered by a 1.6 liter four-cylinder engine producing 138 hp (103 kW / 140 PS) and 123 lb-ft (167 Nm) of torque, the rally bred version must be having a turbocharger for increased power output. Veloster gets six-speed manual transmission or the rather new six-speed dual clutch transmission (DCT) and boasts a specific output of 86.3 hp per liter. To make things better the Veloster returns an estimated 40 mpg.

The standard variant features a clubman like 3 door design and sports 17 inch wheels with 215/45 all season tires. Optionally two sets of 18 inch alloys are available in 215/40 series performance tires.

Official details will be available on Feb 9 Wednesday, so stay tuned.

The Hyundai Veloster would be making its debut in January at the Detroit Auto Show. Hyundai’s Veloster is a compact sports model that is reportedly putting itself in the some market as Volkswagen’s Scirocco. Based on information received, the car will be powered by a 1.6 liter, direct-injection gasoline/petrol engine producing 122 PS (90 kW/121 hp) and 155 Nm (114 lb-ft) of torque.

A 1.6-liter turbocharged unit is expected to follow this first offering, which will have a more robust output of 177 PS (131 kW/175 hp).

It is also being rumored that the US version of the Veloster’s 1.6 engine will have 138 bhp (103 kW) and 123 lb-ft of torque (167 Nm). These reports also reveal that the 2012 Accent from Hyundai will make its debut at the New York Auto Show.

Hyundai Veloster Spotted Testing in Death Valley 6

The much awaited Hyundai Veloster has been spied at a hot weather testing in Death Valley. Spy pictures of the vehicle showed has less camouflage than had been  anticipated.

From what we infer from the pictures, the roof slopes down to curve smoothly as it wraps itself around the cabin that has a round two piece back window. The interior can  also be clearly seen in the pictures and it seems to have an adequate amount of space to fit four adult passengers comfortably.

Reports say that the Veloster coupe’s base-model will come with a 1.6-liter, direct-injection engine with 122 PS (90 kW/121 hp) and 155 Nm (114 lb-ft) of torque.

A 1.6-liter turbocharged unit will reportedly come onto markets close on its heels, which will produce a healthier 177 PS (131 kW/175 hp).
