Mercedes-AMG C63 Driver Hits NYPD Cop After Burnout In Times Square And Somehow Gets Away 16

NYPD officer Ian Wallace was hit by a Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG in Times Square on Saturday night at around 11:45pm, with the driver fleeing the scene after causing a lot of commotion on the street.

The black C63 sedan can be seen doing burnouts in traffic prior to stopping right in front of the officer. Instead of pulling over, though, the driver accelerated and swerved, hitting and then sideswiping the 26-year old officer.

According to the NY Post, Wallace was taken to the hospital where he was treated for minor injuries to his back, arms, right leg and right hip.

After escaping from the intersection, the Mercedes blasted its way westbound on West 42nd Street, hitting multiple cars and, eventually, disappearing.

We guess that, in such a crowded place, someone might have seen the Merc’s number plates, but at the time of writing this article, the investigation was ongoing and no arrests had been made.

Just Another Night In Russia: Man Steals Armored Personnel Carrier And Crushes A Daewoo 10

Smash and grab robberies aren’t too uncommon but one is Russia is getting a lot of attention because the driver used an armored personnel carrier.

While APCs aren’t exactly a dime a dozen, Reuters is reporting the vehicle was stolen from a motorsports training facility by a drunk man in his late 20’s. After stealing the armored personnel carrier, the man reportedly drove the vehicle through a forest before arriving in the town of Apatity which isn’t too far from the Finnish border.

Despite its remote location, the town is home to around 60,000 residents and has narrow streets which apparently proved pretty challenging for drunk in an APC. As a result, the man ended up crushing a Daewoo and slamming into the window of a convenience store.

Reports say the man then excited the vehicle and briefly looked at the damage. He then walked into the store, through the broken window, and apparently stole a bottle of wine.

The man was eventually arrested without incident and locals reportedly didn’t seem too shocked by the events that occurred earlier today.

1,400 Cars Destroyed In Massive Parking Garage Fire On New Year’s Eve 2

Approximately 1,400 vehicles were destroyed on New Year’s Eve when a massive parking garage caught on fire in the United Kingdom.

The fire occurred in a parking garage near the Echo Arena in Liverpool and The Guardian reports that only a handful of vehicles on the top level and corners of the building survived the inferno.

Merseyside fire chief Dan Stephens told the publication the fire apparently started in the engine compartment of Land Rover Discovery which was parked on the second level. The blaze quickly spread to adjacent vehicles and Stephens said the lack of sprinklers played a major role as they could have “suppressed the fire and might even have extinguished the fire.”

The massive blaze required a significant response and the publication reports the fire was battled by 12 fire engines, three aerial units, and 85 firefighters. Thankfully no one was killed in the blaze but three people were hurt. Two were treated for smoke inhalation, while another person injured her hand while trying to escape the fire.

The parking garage was packed by visitors attending the Liverpool International Horse Show which was eventually cancelled as a result of the blaze.

Car Thief Arrested Wearing A “Trust Me” T-Shirt 28

Posted by Michael Gauthier in Police, Reports on 12 28th, 2017

Police in Fairfax County, Virginia have arrested a pair of men for stealing an unlocked car from a resident’s driveway.

While this typically wouldn’t be newsworthy, one of the men was wearing a t-shirt that said “Trust Me” and police say he was anything but trustworthy.

According to the Fairfax County Police Department, a resident started their car at approximately 6:30 am on December 23rd and was letting it warm up in their driveway. When they went to leave, the car was gone.

The resident called police and they eventually spotted the car and conducted a traffic stop. Police arrested 23-year-old Wilmer Lara Garcia and 24-year-old Orlen Nunez who were both from Falls Church. The pair were charged with auto theft but Garcia, who was wearing the Trust Me t-shirt, was also charged with two counts of forgery as he was in procession of altered and forged checks.

The Virginia State Police HEAT task force says thieves steal more than 7,000 vehicles in the state each year and they are valued at more than $55 million annually. Of course, one of the easiest ways to prevent auto theft is using common sense and not leaving your car unlocked with the keys in the ignition.

Wales Police Spent Over $4.7 Million On Repairs In Just Four Years 28
Dec
Posted by Michael Gauthier in Police, Police Cars, Reports, UK on 12 28th, 2017

Police vehicles live a rough life as they’re used in everything from high-speed chases to mundane traffic stops.

According to the BBC, police in Wales spent over £3.5 ($4.7) million to repair police vehicles over the past four years. Over the course of this time period, police vehicles were involved in 4,214 incidents and a number of these involved basic mistakes such as hitting objects when reversing.

The South Wales Police were responsible for most of the damage as the force totaled 27 vehicles and had repair costs in excess of £2.6 ($3.4) million. Assistant Chief Constable Jeremy Vaughan told the BBC “Our drivers are highly skilled and every care is taken with the force’s vehicles, however, it is inevitable that some will be damaged in the course of duty.” He added the force responds to over a million calls every year and noted their vehicles rack up 12 million miles (19.3 million km) annually.

North Wales Police had 1,339 incidents over four year and this resulted in repair costs of £442,776 ($595,383). While the number of incidents sounds high, the force said approximately half of these incidents didn’t involve damage and only required a minor safety check.

The bill doesn’t sound too outrageous but James Price, the campaign manager of the TaxPayers’ Alliance, told the BBC “The police are constantly asking for more money, but clearly they have been wasting our cash by driving recklessly and not respecting the equipment that taxpayers have funded.”

New Jersey Borough Wants To Ban Outsiders From Driving On Roads During Rush Hour 27
Dec
Posted by Michael Gauthier in Police, Reports, USA on 12 27th, 2017

A sleepy little borough in New Jersey is taking bold steps to curb its traffic problems.

Leonia has a population of around 9,200 people and it doesn’t seem like traffic would be much of a problem in such a small town. However, it’s a major issue as a number of commuters cut through the borough to get onto the George Washington Bridge on their way to New York.

In order to combat the problem, the town wants to ban people from who don’t live or work in Leonia from using its roads. According to NJ.com, the borough would issue a yellow tag to hang from your rearview mirror and motorists without the tag driving in Leonia during rush hour – between 6-10 a.m. and 4-9 p.m. – would face fines of up to $200.

While banning the public from using public roads sounds outrageous, Leonia’s mayor told the publication the ordinance has been “thoroughly” researched and he believes the “ordinances we passed are legal and would withstand any potential legal challenge.” Unsurprisingly, not everyone agrees and the deputy legal director of ACLU-NJ said “People who are traveling safely down the street should not be subject to law enforcement. It’s intrusive” and “it’s hard to imagine that Leonia could enforce this in a way that didn’t discriminate.”

Watch Japanese Cop On Bicycle Chase And Pull Over A Lamborghini Huracan 22

A Japanese cop riding a…bicycle versus more than 600 Italian horses makes for a very unusual police chase in the Land of the Rising Sun.

It all started when the driver of an orange Lamborghini Huracan ran a red light and was seen by a police officer, who was patrolling the area on a bicycle.

Without thinking twice, the officer proceeds to chase the traffic code violator, and miraculously catches up with the supercar shortly after, pulling it over.

Some may find what comes next even more surprising, as the law enforcement agent kneels down so that he can engage the conversation at eye level, reminding us that respect and politeness are very much present in Japan.

The driver of the Lamborghini Huracan didn’t get away unpunished, with the officer handing him down a pricey ticket, before both of them carried on their way.

Driver Does Donuts In Front Of Courthouse, Crashes And Promptly Gets Arrested 12
Dec

There is a saying that “there’s no place like home” and for 37-year-old Jonathan Joseph Locksmith that apparently means the Ada County Jail in Boise, Idaho.

According to the Associated Press, Locksmith was upset with the court system and simply wanted to be arrested so he could return to jail. That’s never a good sign but Locksmith thankfully avoided violence and decided to make his feelings known by doing donuts in front of the Ada County Courthouse last Sunday.

Unfortunately, Locksmith’s driving skills were about as good as the 1990’s Honda Accord he was driving. As a result, Locksmith crashed into the courthouse’s fountain and received his wish to be arrested.

Locksmith is currently behind bars and is charged with misdemeanor reckless driving. Idaho law says people who are found guilty of reckless driving for the first time face a fine of up to a $1,000 and / or up to six months in jail.

Interestingly, for Idaho at least, the Ada country government says they have received numerous phone calls from concerned citizens about the status of the fountain. Officials say the fountain wasn’t damaged and noted it was strategically placed to prevent cars from driving into the courthouse. As a Facebook post stated “We’re happy to see these features not only did their job but did it very well!”

Minor Accident Sparks Road Rage Shooting In Houston, One Bystander Injured 8
Dec
Posted by Michael Gauthier in Accidents, Offbeat News, Police, Road Rage, video on 12 8th, 2017

Guns and road rage are a bad combination and it becomes considerably worse when the two mix in heavy traffic.

The latest incident occurred in Houston, Texas following a minor accident between a Jeep Wrangler and a Nissan Rogue. Instead of getting out of their vehicles to exchange insurance information, ABC News says both drivers emerged and began shooting at each other after a brief discussion.

While the initial exchange wasn’t caught on video, a crew from KTRK ABC 13 happened to be at a nearby Starbucks and raced to the scene once they heard gunfire at around 2:45 p.m. on Wednesday. Despite their quick action, the crew arrived shortly after the last shots were fired but the two drivers continued to threaten each other with guns drawn.

Unfortunately, one bystander was hit in the head in the crossfire. Thankfully, an off-duty paramedic was in the area and was able to offer assistance until ambulances arrived.

Police took both men into custody and reports say one of them wounded and taken to a nearby hospital.

Chevy Adds Active Safety Tech To 2018 Tahoe Police Vehicles [w/Video] 5
Dec
Posted by Sergiu Tudose in Chevrolet, Chevrolet Tahoe, Chevrolet Videos, Police, Police Cars, Reports, Tech, video on 12 5th, 2017

The 2018 Chevrolet Tahoe PPV is the first vehicle in its class able to minimize potential crash speeds or help avoid accidents all together.

Aside from the active safety tech, the Tahoe PPV (Police Pursuit Vehicle) also comes with a wide array of safety enhancing features as standard, such as ESC or a Rear Vision Camera with Rear Park Assist.

“We want to protect our protectors and help them get home safely at the end of every shift,” said GM exec, Ed Peper. “The safety technologies we are introducing on the Tahoe PPV may serve as a second set of eyes.”

The new tech is part of Chevrolet’s Enhanced Driver Assist Package, which features Low Speed Forward Automatic Braking, Forward Collision Alert, Lane Keep Assist with Lane Departure Warning, Safety Alert Driver Seat and Power Adjustable Pedals.

The Low Speed Forward Automatic Braking feature has never been offered on a pursuit-rated vehicle before. It works by applying the brakes automatically to help reduce the severity of a crash, as long as the vehicle is traveling at a low speed and the driver hasn’t already applied the brakes.

Meanwhile, the GM-patented Safety Alert Seat system can alert the driver through haptic seat-bottom vibration pulses, instead of the usual audible crash avoidance alerts.

“When they’re on road patrol, police officers are constantly multitasking,” said Royal Oak PD retired chief, Theodore Quisenberry. “Now when officers are scanning their surroundings, so is their vehicle. That will help them stay safe.”
