Apple Patents Navigation System For Autonomous Vehicles 22
Dec
Posted by Brad Anderson in Apple, Autonomous, Reports, Tech on 12 22nd, 2017

Apple has secured a patent for a navigation system designed for self-driving vehicles.

Dubbed ‘Autonomous Navigation System’, the patent application notes a method used by Apple to improve the efficiency of navigation systems for autonomous vehicles, significantly reducing the need to remake detailed maps, CNBC reports.

The technology company notes in the application that traditional autonomous vehicle systems use static information, including maps, as the base of their navigation systems. Sensors are then used to identify real-time information that changes from day to day.

Rather than following this approach, Apple’s technology utilizes a computer model for predicting routes using sensors and processors. This allows the system to direct the car “independently of any data received from any devices external to the vehicle, and any navigation data stored locally to the vehicle prior to any monitoring of navigation.”

Despite remaining tight-lipped about its ventures into the world of autonomous vehicles for a number of years, Apple has slowly started to admit its interest in the industry. In fact, Apple chief executive Tim Cook recently said the firm is “very focused on autonomous systems” and views autonomy as “sort of the mother of all AI projects.”

Apple Allegedly Leasing Ex-Chrysler Proving Grounds For Autonomous Vehicle Testing 4
Dec

Apple is reportedly leasing proving grounds in Arizona once owned by Chrysler in a bid to test autonomous vehicles.

A source claims that the technology company has made progress in self-driving software. Jalopnik suggests it means Apple is still investing heavily in autonomous vehicles.

Last year, it was revealed that Apple had scrapped plans to build its very own autonomous vehicle. Instead, the company has shifted its focus towards the technology needed to make a fully self-driving car. Recently, Apple chief executive Tim Cook said that Apple was working on autonomous systems and last week, Apple previewed its ongoing work with LiDAR.

The facility in question was once used by Chrysler to test its vehicles and includes a high-speed oval, a range of road surfaces, and areas for wet weather testing.

Daimler Chrysler sold the proving grounds in 2005 for $312 million to a developer intending on building some 16,500 houses at the location. However, these plans fell through and a deal was recently reached to lease the property to Route 14 Investment Partners LLC. It’s yet to be determined if Route 14 has an affiliation with Apple.

Apple Scientists Submit Paper On Autonomous Vehicle Research 22
Nov
Posted by Sergiu Tudose in Apple, Autonomous, Reports, Tech on 11 22nd, 2017

In what appears to be Apple’s first publicly disclosed paper on autonomous vehicle technology, we learn that the Cupertino giant has a better way to spot cyclists and pedestrians on the road.

The paper was submitted last week to an independent online journal by Yin Zhou and Oncel Tuzel, who proposed an improved way for helping computers detect three-dimensional objects, reports Autonews.

It’s called “VoxelNet” and has apparently produced “highly encouraging results” in spotting pedestrians and cyclists with just Lidar data. The pair also disclosed that they were able to beat other approaches for detecting three-dimensional objects that used only Lidar.

Usually, autonomous cars use a combination of two-dimensional cameras and deep-sensing ‘Lidar’ units in order to navigate their surroundings. Even though these units provide good depth information, their low resolution makes it difficult to detect small objects in the distance without help from a normal camera. In other words, Apple has apparently found a way to extract more performance from ‘Lidar’ technology.

It’s important to point out that these tests were simulated on a computer and did not involve any cars hitting the road.
